Description: The painting depicts the moment when Iphigenia is about to be sacrificed by her father Agamemnon. The Greek fleet is becalmed at Aulis, and the seer Calchas has prophesied that the only way to appease the gods and get the wind to blow again is to sacrifice Iphigenia. Agamemnon is reluctant to do so, but he eventually gives in. Iphigenia is led to the altar, and the priest is about to strike her down when Artemis intervenes and saves her.
