Description: Thomas Bewick (1753-1828) was an Unknown wood-engraver who is considered to be the father of modern wood-engraving. He was born in Ovingham, Northumberland, and served his apprenticeship with a Newcastle engraver. He moved to London in 1776 and worked for several years as a book illustrator. In 1789 he returned to Newcastle and set up his own business. He produced a number of books on natural history, including his most famous work, A History of British Birds (1797-1804). He died in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear.
