Artist: Joseph Mallord William Turner
Artwork: Tivoli: The Villa of Maecenas
Description: In 1819 Turner made his first visit to Rome, and Tivoli, with its picturesque landscape and wealth of classical remains, became one of his favourite sketching grounds. The Villa of Maecenas was a vast estate laid out in the 1st century BC and named after its owner, the wealthy patron of the arts Gaius Maecenas. Turner made numerous sketches of the ruins, which he exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1820.
