Description: This is a preparatory sketch for Turner’s oil painting of 1843, which is now in the Tate collection. The painting illustrates a scene from Heinrich Heine’s 1835 poem ‘Elementargeister’ (‘Elemental Spirits’), in which the water spirit Undine gives a magic ring to the fisherman Massaniello.
